NGAL overview
Gelatinase-associated lipid transporter (NGAL) is a small molecule protein expressed by neutrophils. NGAL is highly expressed in renal tubular epithelial cells and is released into the urine and blood within 2 hours after acute kidney injury. It has the characteristics of quick reaction, high specificity and little influence by other factors. Therefore, it can be used as a biomarker for early sensitive acute kidney injury and can also be used to predict the diagnosis of sepsis. High concentrations of NGAL can be detected in the urine and blood of patients with chronic kidney disease caused by a variety of diseases, so it can also be used in the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic kidney disease.
